Under Construction Crib Bedding by Cocalo - A Product Review

Cocalo, a designer and manufacturer of themed crib bedding collections since the late 1990's, first became known for its crib bedding collections marketed under the Baby Martex, OshKosh, and Kimberly Grant brands, names first associated with adult or children's clothing and decor. Recently, they have begun to introduce new patterns under their internal Cocalo brand. Under Construction crib bedding is one of Cocalo's few remaining OshKosh bedding collections. For mothers-to-be seeking a very masculine theme for their baby boy's nursery, Under Construction represents a reasonably priced alternative.

Under Construction crib bedding is normally available as a four-piece crib set, consisting of a comforter, four-sided crib bumper, dust ruffle, and fitted sheet. Consumers should be pleased to see that Cocalo sells this pattern in the four-piece set. Cocalo, following the lead of other manufacturers, is increasingly introducing new patterns in six-piece sets which include a diaper stacker and valance. The smaller sets, combined with the availability of the other items as separate accessories, provides the consumer with the most flexibility. Unfortunately, none of the pieces of the Under Construction four-piece set is available separately, thereby reducing consumer choices. In particular, an extra fitted sheet, frequently desired by consumers, is not available for Under Construction. As in most Cocalo sets, the comforter is a lighter weight and less bulky covering than many of the stuffed quilts sold by other manufacturers, for those who prefer this approach.

Cocalo provides a relatively standard selection of coordinating Under Construction nursery decor accessories, including: musical mobiles, valances, diaper stackers, lamp shades, rugs, pillows, wall border, wall decorations, and blankets. All of the accessories coordinate perfectly with the Under Construction crib bedding set. This collection incorporates an interesting selection of fabrics in shades of blues, greens, and oranges.

Cocalo appears to have gone the extra mile to incorporate high quality fabrics and workmanship into this moderately priced collection. Although some of the striped and plaid fabrics are of the printed variety, many of them are of the higher quality woven variety. In woven fabrics, differently dyed or colored threads are woven together in a manner to create the desired pattern. Contrast this with printed fabrics, where a pattern is imprinted on the surface of a solid colored fabric. Woven fabrics are superior to, and more expensive than, printed fabrics, being more vibrant, durable, and color-fast. A deep blue corduroy fabric works very well with the theme, and even the solid green fabric has an interesting diamond pattern sewn into it to give it added character. Most of the Under Construction set pieces and accessories feature well-designed embroidered construction equipment using textured appliquéd fabrics.

For those interested in alternatives with this particular theme, Kidsline, a highly-regarded manufacturer, makes Construction Zone crib bedding with a far more extensive selection of coordinating accessories. In fact, the similar coloring of these two sets should allow consumers to use Kidsline Construction Zone accessories in an Under Construction nursery.
